Title

The Curriculum Vitae of John James Newport (1867-1946)

The following is a list of the achievements of my grandfather, John James Newport; from when he first started teaching until his death in a fatal road accident, in Hooe, in 1946.

It's not complete because I intend to add those certificates that he was awarded at school - at least as far as I have been able to glean. There are others, I am sure, but more "digging" will be necessary and, if anybody should know of any, I would be pleased to hear.

1) "An Illustrated Historical and Descriptive Account of Hooe Church, Sussex."

1st Edition - 1898 (Hand-written)
2nd Edition - 1899
3rd Edition* - 1987 - (Published by my uncle, Donald Herbert Newport)

* - This has been produced from "an updated and incomplete draft of a third edition" written by my grandfather, which came into my uncle's possession.

At the end of the original first edition my grandfather has added the following.

"PLEASE NOTE"

"The foregoing pages are the result of reading and thought in a few weeks' holiday. Curiosity roused by a simple unsatisfied question led the author to devote many hours to archaeology, topography, and architecture. He realises his inability to grasp what time has snatched away. The charm of his subject and the encouraging interest and help of friends have caused him to do a little, which he trusts may be blessed to do much good."

PRO DEO ET PATRIA,

J.J.N.

Caritas Villa, Hooe - October 1st.1898"

2) "Records of Hooe, Battle, Sussex"

My grandfather, in 1936, produced the draft of a small book he had been working on, since 1898. The book was simply entitled "The Records of Hooe" and was, basically, the history of the village, from Domesday up to the, then, present time, using the many parish records to which he had access. For comment, he passed the draft copy to another person in the village and the draft was mislaid, and thought to be lost. Many years later parts of it came to light and the story was put together from those pieces and privately published, in 1989.
