1890 November 7th. - Letter from G. H. Jones

New College,
16, Dalby Square, Margate.

"Dear Mr.Newport,"

I suppose you have the hump because I have not answered your letter. The fact is time has been a very valuable article with me of late.

I have read with much interest your account of camp life. You have the consolation that you spent your holidays in doing good and that is something.

Mrs.Jones, Ethel and I apent a very happy three weeks at a farm house near Canterbury. Playing at cricket several times during the day gives me much enjoyment.

"School Notes" will have given you all the news. We are working very hard here - at least I am.

It will interest you to know that at one of the classes your name cropped up when the undemonstrative Frank Sharp exclaimed, " I wish Mr.Newport was here now." You will be pleased at this.

We are all fairly well. Mrs.Jones and Ethel do not know I am writing to you or they would unite with me in kind regards.

Yours very faithfully,

Hugh Jones

The N.C.C.A. - fewer members! The unsatisfactory conduct of one or two of them has deterred several from joining. Boys detest hypocracy.

JWNs Note - what these last few sentences refer to is unclear but the the first two letters, I feel, must refer to "New College" and was some sort of association within the college, itself, and so well-known to G.H. Jones and my grandfather that it didn't need any expansion. Why he said, "Boys detest hypocracy" is unknown but time may well throw up the truth.
