I Can′t believe he did that!

The following is from a newspaper cutting, in my grandfather′s book, but which has no date and gives no clue as to which newspaper it might have come from. In my searches of both the local newspapers, I have not come across it yet but, perhaps, one day I will!

"Hooe Church"

"A few days ago, a man was observed trying to open the west door of the church. After being unmolested an hour of two, he was watched by a couple of farm hands, whose suspicions were aroused. They gave information to one of the churchwarden′s sons and the three together marched up to him and seized him. It was, then, evident he was doing his best to break into the church."

"The culprit was then taken to the other churchwarden to decide what should be done. After a time the fellow was let go. Much amusement has been made of the affair by the villagers, as it is rumoured the man was ordered to find his way to the police-station to deliver himself up, and was given a penny to buy himself some bread on the road."

"The police were informed of the matter, but as yet nothing seems to have been done to find the rogue, and he is still at large."
