703 – House Names and Owners – c1938

According to the index in the East Sussex Record Office, this document is a "List of Names of Houses and Cottages in the parish with some owner's names beside them. (c1938)". - Click here to see the List (you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader)

The 'document' comprises an envelope, with a King George V stamp addressed to my grandfather, as below: -

J. J. Newport, Esq.,
Clerk to the Parish Council,
Hooe Common,
Battle,
Sussex.

In the envelope are two copies of the list (each copy being four sheets of paper clipped together)

At top left, of the envelope, are the words: -

"URGENT - SECRET"

The cancellation of the postage stamp appears to be dated 29 Sep 35 (it isn't clear so the year could be 1935 or 1938). However, the Record Office states that this is 'c1938' so we must accept that as true.

They list the names of houses in the village of Hooe and, in some cases, the name of the person who lived there.

I have no idea why this list was so important that it required the words "Urgent-Secret" written on the envelope or to what it was intended to put it but I’m hoping that one of the Council Meeting's Minutes will tell me why.
