Melville & Co. - 1858

HOOE comprises 2447 acres of productive land, and in 1851 there were 574 inhabitants; it is in the Hailsham union, Ninfield hundred, and Hastings rape. The churches and ancient edifice, built of stone, in the early style of English architecture. The living is a vicarage, in the patronage and incumbency of the Rev Thomas R. Jones. The annual cattle fair is held here on the first of May. There is also in this parish an excellent free school, supported by voluntary contributions.
