Saxton's map of 1579

Christopher Saxton, a Yorkshire man, was born about 1542 and was an English mapmaker, who many would compare favourably with John Speed. He produced an atlas of county maps, of England and Wales, which was published in 1579 and included the first detailed maps of the country.

For the next two hundred years his maps were issued and re-issued with up-dated information as town plans, roads, and many other items were added to his original.

It would seem most probable that my grandfather made his sketch from the original map because local libraries and museums would be very unlikely to have a copy. I also know that my grandfather often went up to the British Museum and the British Library and it was, probably, in one or the other of these that he found the map and made his sketch.
