Title

Madeley, Shropshire

The best way to find Madeley, on the map, is to start at Shrewsbury and follow the river about 17 miles downstream to Ironbridge, which is situated right by the river side at the bottom of the valley. Madeley is, then, about a mile or two up on top of the valley, still heading in the same direction.

I try not to mention Telford, the building of which replaced so much of the beautiful countryside with housing estates, roads, and the iniquitous roundabouts. At a single stroke, in the 1960s, the history of all those villages was cut short as they became "Telford". Virtually gone are the local accents destroyed at the same time.

I say that I try not to mention Telford, so I won't but it did destroy many small, local communities. It is difficult, though not impossible, to see, very occasionally, the structure of the old villages.

Madeley, for me, belongs in the period between 1948, when I arrived in Shropsghire, and 1949/50, when we moved to Ironbridge but, even with such a short period, I have many fond memories, and quite a few dreadful ones!
