Coalbrookdale High School - The School Song

The High School had a song for special occasions and I was given a copy of the words by Norman Angell, the Chairman of the "Coalbrookdale High School Old Students Association". I remember the tune but I won't sing it here as there are too many people listening - well. at least one - oh, that's me.

While at the school, I was told that, whenever a headmaster left, he was required to add a verse to the School Song but Norman Angell said that he had never heard of that story so, perhaps, it wasn't true.

THE SCHOOL SONG

Our school shall boast as proud a name,
As any in the land;
Her record shall be free from shame,
High shall her honour stand.
Her children for their loyalty.
Truth, wisdom, courage, shall be known.
Where is the school shall claim to be.
A better than our own?

School by the River, the Dale, and the Hill
Dear to our hearts thy name will be still,
Honour to thee from us all shall not fail,
School by the River, the Hill, and the Dale.

May those who wear our badge today
Be prompt at duty’s call;
Sincere in work and keen in play
And each be true to all.
Then those who come when we are gone
Shall joy to be where we have been,
And leave to all who follow on
A record fair and clean.

In later years with visage stern,
If duty points the way,
Our thoughts to Coalbrookdale will turn;
We’ll shrink not from the fray,
And we shall say that, here in youth,
We learned to work and play the game;
To act with vigour, love, and truth,
And honour, School, thy name.
